DEVELOPING OPEN DATA POLICY PLANS (EMPOWERING)

The Challenge

To create an enabling environment for open data, a clear and effective open data policy is required. Many governments require support setting up such policies.

The Solution

Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Wageningen Environmental Research and the CTA, GODAN Action have developed a process to support governments in setting up an open data policy framework for agriculture. It makes use of the knowledge and guidance developed by the GODAN Action project, and reuses among other tools, the FAO’s Open Data Toolkit (freely available on their Web site) and the Open Up Guide for Agriculture, jointly developed by GODAN and the Open Data Charter to provide practical and policy guidance in opening data.

The Outcome

Currently, the Ghanaian government is setting up policy and investment plans for open data, supported by GODAN Action partners. The process is being documented as a template for reuse in other countries.
