The Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) held its prestigious annual conference and awards at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa from 29-30 October, 2019.

The conference theme was Enhancing Impact: Digitalisation, Investment and Intra-African Trade. The event aimed to promote and accelerate the growth of women-owned and women-led businesses for economic growth in Africa.

AWIEF is a platform that sees global thought leaders, industry experts, policymakers, academics, development organisations and investors gather to network and share in an effort to boost Africa’s entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The conference centred around the following questions:

  • How to leverage the digital economy.
  • How to provide more access to affordable investment and finance to women to drive women entrepreneurship.
  • Analysing the importance and role that women have to play in the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

AWIEF is organised and hosted by a non-profit organisation of the same name, with offices in both Nigeria and South Africa. Aside the annual conference, awards and exhibition, the organisation hosts year-round events and programmes to mentor, fund and support women entrepreneurs on the African continent.

GODAN Executive Director, André Laperrière, attended the conference as one of the key speakers in the roundtable discussion on "Digitalisation: Breaking Barriers to Drive Agribusinesses for Women in Africa," on the first day of the event. The roundtable discussion centred around ways to tackle issues facing women in the agricultural industry, including how technology could be leveraged to facilitate the empowerment of females in agribusiness. Mr Laperrière explored the benefits of the digital economy and how it can be used to increase the participation of women in agribusiness.
