The Gender Summit (GS) is a platform for scientists, policymakers, scholars and stakeholders to examine research evidence showing the impact of biological and socio-cultural differences on outcomes. The aim is to make gender equality in research and innovation the norm.
The Gender Summit has helped influence, among other things, how gender is addressed and recognised in the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, resulting in greater gender balance in science and innovation projects. GS6 resulted in a report, produced by a panel of international experts, on Gender-Based Innovations for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showing how gender issues are linked to many of the 17 SDGs. According to the report, focus on the SDG5 of gender equality and women’s empowerment will not be sufficient to achieve the full impact.
Dr. Kiringai Kamau, GODAN Regional Lead (Africa), will be represeanting GODAN at this year's Summit.
GS18 will focus on climate change, examining how marginalized groups can harness knowledge and technology for their empowerment. Looking at how scientific understanding of biological and ecological factors, together with knowledge of socio-cultural conditions, can be effectively deployed to improve farming practices and create opportunities to prosper in the new and changing world of agriculture.
The two-day Summit will provide many opportunities for participants to network, share knowledge and experience, and explore opportunities for collaboration in research, innovation and development.
