Open data for agricultural challenges in the Middle East
GODAN is attending The Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture in Abu Dhabi this week and is focused on sharing the concept of open data as a way of tackling agricultural challenges in the Middle East.
The region currently shows a remarkable place for innovation in the agricultural sector.
Despite tough boundary conditions imposed by a harsh climate, key technologies such as smart irrigation systems have been developed and brought to market in the region.
Five percent of the land on the Arabic Peninsula is cultivated, and 99% of that area is irrigated with 1% being rainfed agriculture.
Saudi Arabia extracts more than 9 times the amount of water that is recharged which means it is creating a water deficit year after year.
